Nine missing after China bridge collapse

HONG KONG: Nine people were missing after a mile-long bridge over the Xijiang river in southern China collapsed after being hit by a boat loaded with sand, state media reported Saturday.

Seven of those missing were traveling in four cars that plunged into the river early Friday, while two were pedestrians on the bridge in Guangdong province, Xinhua news agency reported.

The boat smashed into the base of the bridge, causing a 200-metre section of the structure to collapse, Xinhua said.

All 10 crew members aboard the boat were rescued. Two were treated in hospital for minor injuries and released. The entire crew was placed under police surveillance pending an investigation, the report said
