MALAYSIA: Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi has finally announced that he is getting married for the second time, ending months of speculation.
The widower has planned a private wedding at his official residence in Putrajaya this Saturday.
Malaysia's 67-year-old prime minister was all smiles when he confirmed his plans to remarry, some two years after the death of his wife.
Launching a small and medium industries conference in Kuala Lumpur, Paklah, as he is affectionately known in the country, shared a light moment with participants.
He said: "Thank you for your best wishes. You see for the Malay, when he gets married, people like to tease him, especially when he gets married for the second time."
Mr Abdullah will wed 53-year-old French Malaysian Jeanne Abdullah, a former hotelier who is the chief of household at his official residence.
He has known her for twenty years.
The prime minister said Jeanne's pleasant personality and easy-going nature makes her a good life companion.
His siblings and children have given them their blessings.
He said: "A happy prime minister can do a lot of good work. No, I am not saying I have not been happy. I'm just happier now."
Mr Abdullah's first wife Endon Mahmood, whom he was married to for 40 years, lost the battle with cancer.
The prime minister said: "My love for Endon remains strong, I believe that God has created in your heart many spaces for different people that you can love as much as you want."
Mr Abdullah's bride-to-be was previously married to Endon's brother, but they have been divorced for 15 years.
She has two daughters and two granddaughters.
News of the upcoming marriage has been well received by Malaysians from all walks of life.
